You CAN Select The Best Pressure Washer! - By: Matt Wright, Posted on: 2007-07-27

Well, you need to tackle some big cleanup jobs - you know you need a good pressure washer, but you don't know which one would be the best one for your needs. How do you choose? We'd like to offer some guidance, and a little advice, to help you make the best possible choice.

Where to start? Perhaps with this question: How often will you need to use your pressure washer? If you will only need to do an occasional cleaning, perhaps once a week or less, then a model designed for homeowners or for 'residential' use would make a good choice. If you will be doing cleaning much more often than that - several times a week, then you will need a commercial-grade unit for that kind of workload.

In addition to how often, you will also need to consider just WHAT you will be cleaning. In particular: Will you be cleaning really gummy, grimy, oil- and grease-caked build-up? If so, you will need - at a minimum - a pressure washer unit that heats the water to a high temperature. Cold water will not cut through grease and oil. The best units for this type of clean up are those that develop steam vapor.

If you need your pressure washer primarily to clean up your car or deck or sidewalk - then you will find that a unit that develops under 2000 PSI will work just fine.

But on the other hand, if you need to clean your house brickwork, aluminum siding, or even a large truck - you will need a pressure washer that can deliver at least 2000-3000 PSI. This is sufficient for these jobs.

What about pressure washers that pack a real wallop - they deliver over 3000 PSI? They are for use (primarily) in industrial environments - although some residential users may have a need for them.

Many residential users choose a commercial-grade unit anyway, however. They get a pressure washer that will last longer and have a better warranty. This is because they are made with better quality components - especially the water pump.

A few final recommendations: Don't forget to ask about how your unit will be serviced if it breaks down. Also, make sure that you buy all of the accessories that you will need - many are available, and may not be sold with the unit, but must be purchased separately. Finally, follow safe practices: wear goggles, be careful of hot water, and NEVER point the nozzle at others.
