Advice On The Purchase and Care of Furniture - By: Stefan Teek, Posted on: 2007-08-13

Purchasing furniture sounds simple until you try to do it. There are lots of styles, prices and sales techniques. Knowledge is the key to a good experience, so here you go.

1. Determining A Good Mattress – A good mattress should sink a bit when you lie on it. It should not be a grand canyon after you get up. Otherwise, go by feel after laying down on it for 10 to 15 minutes.

2. Leather Furniture Warranties – When buying leather furniture, ask about warranties. This is one time you want to buy the warranty. Leather repairs can be pricey.

3. Mattress Pricing – The price of a mattress is reflective of only one thing – what they store thinks they can get for it. Price does not mean quality.

4. Antique Furniture Salespeople – A sales persons job is to sell furniture, not necessarily be “accurate.” Don’t rely on anything they tell you about an antique piece.

5. MDF Labels – Look out for MDF on furniture labels. While the salesperson may be trying to tell you it is solid wood, MDF means it is medium density fiberboard.

6. Slip Sliding Furniture – If you need to move furniture around a house, you can do it easily now. An enterprising company has pads you can place on the bottom of the legs that slide.

7. Antique Furniture Investment – Many people buy antique furniture for the investment value. In practical terms, this rarely works if you hate the look of the piece. Try to buy a good investment that matches your tastes.

8. Heating Vents and Leather – Do not place your leather furniture around heating vents. They will dry the leather out.

9. Hiding Furniture Scratches – Scratches in your furniture can be absolutely maddening. Ah, but you can hide them. Try a padding lacquer.

10. Potpourri and Furniture – As strange as it may sound, potpourri will destroy the finish on your furniture. Don’t even sit the bag on it.

Buying furniture is one of those areas where you can really get carried away. Pieces are generally not cheap and they can add up quickly. Make sure you have a budget in mind and stick to it.
