California House Styles
Traditional House Styles
The traditional house styles in the California real estate market are the Spanish, Beach Bungalow, Victorian, Colonial, French, Prarie, Ranch, Art Deco, Contemporary Luxury, and Tutor. Here is a basic list of the predominant features of each style:
Spanish Style:
Many homes in California have an abode look, they are also known as pueblo homes. They look like the old California missions with arches and arch doorways, sometimes awnings with bells on top and dark rooms inside to keep cool in warmer weather. They are normally a light cream or pink color.
Beach Bungalow Style:
Long Beach homes have a historical section in Rosa Parks and the Bluffs with many Beach style Bungalows. These small one story classics have a higher foundation with a small stairway in front large windows, and a few round or square pillars to cover a long porch to support a cozy rocking bench just outside.
Victorian Style:
These are the older two story homes we usually label nice. That is because Victorian is not a label for a type of house exactly but a time period for housing between 1840-1900. Usually the roofs are pointed with wooden or brick siding and there is a staircase in the front entrance.
Colonial Style:
These are boxy aristocratic looking houses with pillars in front. They are usually two or more stories with nice trim around the windows.
French Style:
These houses are boxy two story structures with flat roofs and a slightly sloped second story exterior and lots of detail and trim around the windows and small balconies sometimes on the second story.
Prarie Style:
These homes have a porch that goes all the way around the exterior of the home.
Ranch Style:
These houses are usually L shaped one story California homes.
Art Deco Style:
These homes have nonlinear and noncircular artistic shapes either on the sides or roof of the California house and multiple untraditional styles.
Contemporary Luxury Style:
These homes are big, have bold shapes, such as high windows, or extended bay windows, extended hallways and other luxury items.
Tudor Style:
These English homes are known for their really tall sloped roofs.
