California Building Permits
Overview:
A building permit is a certificate of authorization by a local government agency to remodel or build a structure on a piece of land. The Uniform Building Code (UBC) creates regulations for construction in the western states, which determine the standard codes for construction on land in California. Generally, most building projects and even some small maintenance repairs require that some kind of blue print or building plans be submitted to the city for a building permit whether or not you are doing the project yourself or hiring a contractor. To know if you need a permit as a rule of thumb it’s probably best to look in the area you want to build because rules change from city to city. Major structural changes like adding rooms or changing roofs require permits, but small adjustments to a structure may not, such as painting the inside of a house, adding a tool shed or changing kitchen cabinets. City building and planning departments receive oversight from the counties, so below are all the counties in the Southern California real estate market which should help you locate the permit requirements for your planned building project.
